Kolanji Review: The film opens with a playful Kolanji (Kirubakaran) getting a few whacks from his father Appasamy (Samuthirakani), who is an atheist. Kolanji’s playfulness and unruly behaviour lands him in trouble at all times with his father, who keeps scolding and beating him. This forms a hatred for his father in Kolanji, but he seems to be happy when he is with his uncle Gemini (Rajaji of Moodar Koodam fame) and he helps him in his love for his cousin sister Poongoodi (Naina Sarwar).

The story revolves around Kolanji and his feelings towards his father, and takes a drastic turn after an incident involving his younger brother. How Kolanji realises his father’s affection when he lands in trouble with a fellow villager’s son forms the rest of the story.

What doesn’t work in favour of the film are the romance portions, which moves us away from the main story. While this track between Rajaji and Naina Sarwar tests our patience to some extent, there is some relief when our feeling is echoed by Adivangi (Nasath of Appa fame). Though the humour works in some scenes, there are too many such portions that don’t work.

As for the performances, Kolanji and Adivangi’s are noteworthy along with Samuthirakani’s in the film. The movie reminds us of Samuthirakani’s Appa to some extent, and is also likely to strike a chord with those who has had a strict father during their growing up years.
